Start your 9 days adventure from Baisha (Lijiang) at 2,400m altitude in China’s south-western Yunnan province and follow in the footsteps of long forgotten explorers. Drive south along the Old Tea Horse Road to Dali Old Town, home of the Bai minority people and set on the banks of tranquil Erhai Lake. Head for the mountains to Nuodeng, a hillside village barely visible on modern map, before you continue to Shaxi, a true vestige of the once busy Old Tea Horse Road and still known for its colourful Friday market. Ascend curvy mountain roads to 3,100m altitude and reach mythical Shangri-La for a first taste of Tibetan culture and cuisine. End your expedition with a spectacular drive through the brutal yet stunning Tiger Leaping Gorge on your way back to Baisha.

Erhai Lake
The lake is still an important food source for the local Bai minority who can still be spotted fishing with trained cormorants.

Lunch in Xizhou 
Keep trailing the lake’s shoreline road and stop for lunch in Xizhou, a quaint but camera-friendly Bai minority village set on the west bank of the lake. 

Dali
Once the capital of the Nanzhao Kingdom, these days Dali is known for its traditional Bai minority architecture and cozy shopping streets.

Cangshan Mountains 
Head west towards the Cangshan Mountains. Follow near deserted roads that link remote minority villages with the outside world.

Nuodeng
Arrive in a small village called Nuodeng, built on a hill and only accessible by stairs. Marvel at a local temple while mules carry your luggage to your guesthouse.

The hillside village is known for its salted pork, a distant memory of Nuodeng’s importance along the Old Salt Road. Go for an evening walk or watch the sun set behind the hills from your guesthouse balcony.

Pi river
Drive north after breakfast, trailing the curves of the Pi River. This section of the river is well-known for its many span bridges.

Tongjing Bridge
Tongjing Bridge is the largest wooden bridge in Yunnan Province and dates back to the 18th century. Nowadays it is still used by locals to get their cattle across.

Shaxi
Nowadays it remains rather peaceful on the narrow streets of Shaxi but during the heydays of the Old Tea Horse Road the place was teeming with life.

Shibao Shan
Visit nearby Shibao Shan with its multireligious shrines in the afternoon or take it easy and have a freshly brewed Yunnan coffee in one of the cosy cafes at the town’s central square.

Shaxi

Songzanlin Monastery
Admire this restored monastery built in 1679 and considered as the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan. It is also referred as the ‘Little Potala Palace’ due to its resemblance to the original one.

Napa Lake
Enjoy some free time by your own or take a tour to the Napa Lake, just west of
Shangri-La. Its outlook changes according to the season and is home to a large number of waterfowl in winter. Admire the surrounding area and the giant houses built by the locals to accommodate their families and live stock as well as to display their wealth.

Tiger Leaping Gorge
Admire this natural wonder carved out by the rushing waters of the mighty Yangtze River over the centuries. Called Chang Jiang in Chinese, it is the third longest river in the world and used to be the backbone of China’s inland transportation system for thousands of years.

Trekking along the Tiger Leaping Gorge
