Start your 5 days adventure from Baisha (Lijiang) at 2,400m altitude in Yunnan province and follow the way of the forgotten explorers. Head south to the Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of China’s most spectacular natural sceneries, before you continue to Shaxi, a true vestige of the Old Tea Horse Road. Keep going south towards Dali Old Town, home of the Bai minority people and set on the banks of the Erhai Lake. End your expedition with a scenic drive along China’s own Mediterranean Sea back to Baisha.

Day 01, Origin/Lijiang/Baisha (50 km.)

Tiger Leaping Gorge
Admire this natural wonder carved out by the rushing waters of the mighty Yangtze River over the centuries. Called Chang Jiang in Chinese, it is the third longest river in the world and used to be the backbone of China’s inland transportation system for thousands of years. 

Trekking along the Tiger Leaping Gorge
Get into the narrowest section of the gorge. In this same place and according to the legend, a tiger leaped from one side to another to escape from a local hunter. 

Shaxi
Nowadays it remains rather peaceful on the narrow streets of Shaxi but during the heydays of the Old Tea Horse Road the place was teeming with life.

Shibao Shan
Discover the multireligious shrines patrolled by cheeky monkeys and find out more about the religious traditions of the inhabitants of the region.

Once the capital of the Nanzhao Kingdom, the city is famous for its traditional Bai minority architecture and delightful shopping streets. 

Catholic Church of Dali
Learn about the Catholic Church built by French missionaries in the late 1800s following the path of the local Bai architecture.

Erhai Lake
The lake is still an important food source for the local Bai minority who can still be spotted fishing with trained cormorants.
